Submission + - Music Publishers Block Longer iTunes Song Previews (techdirt.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Even though the research shows that longer song "previews" in music stores leads to people buying more music, and the fact that the major record labels all apparently agreed to let Apple put longer song previews in iTunes, that wasn't announced this week. Why? Because the song publishers (separate from the labels, even though labels own some publishers) are upset that Apple didn't ask for permission first. The publishers even seem willing to admit that this would be good for them and would likely help sell more, but they apparently were ready to sue Apple if it took this step to help them sell more without first getting permission.
