The country that almost was

Initially known for a large zinc mine, Moresnet nearly became an independant country with Esperanto as the official language. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Also of note, the Esperanto speaking "micronation" named Rose Island was extinguished by the Italian Navy with explosives :-(

  • The lowlands have other oddities, too. Take a look at the border between Belgium and The Netherlands around Baarle-Nassau [google.co.uk]. In places, it comes down to individual fields belonging to the neighbouring country, rather than the one by which they are landlocked.
  • I thought that was the language Starbuck's invented so their drinks sounded more cultured.
