Three days ago
My secretary: "For some reason, I don't have your cell number on file. What is it?"
Me: "It's 999-555-1234, but please don't give it out to anyone else."
Her: "What? Why not?"
Me: "Because it's my personal cell phone, and I don't want to run up a bunch of air time. I also don't want everyone in the group to have my personal info."
Her: "You mean you don't have a business phone? You weren't issued one when you came on board? I'll take care of it."
Me: "I didn't mean... that is... uh... thanks."
Today
Note from my secretary: "Your new Blackberry in on your desk. Activation info and password is on the printout from the IT guy. Let me know if you want bluetooth."
I don't know if I'm just weirded out by the idea of having an electronic tether like a Blackberry at all, or at having been identified as someone who should have been equipped with an all-expenses paid electronic tether back on Day One. The fact that I never expect this phone to ring with good news is also a bit off-putting.
Come to think of it, having a secretary who just Makes Stuff Happen for me is still very strange.
